If you’re having a new home built, chances are the contractor you’ve hired to do the work will subcontract out the roofing work, although some contractors will have a crew that is experienced enough to do the job. In either case, it’s in your best interests to be at least somewhat aware of all that is involved in installing a roof properly, so you’ll know what questions to ask, and you’ll be in a position to understand the answers. The roofer may ask you what type of roofing you want. If you simply reply “asphalt shingles”, the roofer should explain what the various types of asphalt shingles are, which type would be best for your home, and why. Otherwise you may get a low end product which, if coupled with something less than high quality workmanship, could cause you a great deal of trouble and expense down the road. The roofer may also ask you if you want a 25-year roof or a 30-year roof. Expect to pay more for the latter, although what you are paying for is higher quality.

*     All asphalt shingles are not the same. There are at least three different basic configurations, three tab shingles, multi-tab shingles, and no cutout laminated shingles, sometimes referred to as architectural shingles. Each type has its pros and cons, and the cost will vary as well. Some shingles, the heavier and more expensive ones, consist primarily of asphalt and felt, while the majority of shingles sold feature fiberglass-asphalt construction.

*     Shingles are also given fire ratings, those ratings being Class A , Class B, and Class C. Asphalt shingles are not fireproof, but they do need to be fire resistant and the ratings reflect how fire resistant a shingle is expected to be. Shingles also need to be wind resistant. Laminated shingles generally have the best wind ratings , and also carry the longest warranties. The asphalt-on-felt shingles are generally recommended in colder climates, while the asphalt-fiberglass shingles hold up slightly better in warm climates. In any event, your roofing contractor should be able to tell you which type will best suit your needs.

Get roofing materials of the highest quality, while still designed it to fit within your budget, the roofing crews are well versed in the latest and best roofing installation techniques. A home improvement representative will be happy to discuss your roofing needs with you.
