Remodeling a bathroom can be exciting. A bathroom remodel could transform your space to a spa-like oasis and it’s probably something you are looking forward to, particularly if you have been ‘living with’ a less than beautiful bathroom. Planning for the costs associated with a bathroom remodel can be tricky. Whether it’s being done yourself or being done by a professional or a series of professionals (plumbers, painters, etc.) here are some things to keep in mind:

Consider More than One Remodeling Quote

Getting a quote from more than one contractor is a good idea. Costs for products and labor costs will vary and could vary significantly depending on who you call. By getting a few quotes you can carefully review your options.

Comparing Apples to Apples

When comparing more than one bathroom remodeling quote you’ll want to look at the bottom line cost, yes, but there are some other things to look at, too, such as:

* Are the costs fixed costs or estimates?
* Is the quality of materials comparable (bathroom fixtures, etc.)
* What are the warranties like on the fixtures and on the workmanship?
* What’s in the fine print?
* How quickly will the job get done?

Even if you’re looking at a quote you consider to be a good one it’s important to check out the reputation of the contractors, too. You want to deal with licensed, insured, and reputable companies who have a good reputation. You don’t want homeowner’s remorse due to feeling like you:

* Overpaid for what you got
* Didn’t get the quality you wanted
* Had to wait much longer than what was promised for having a completed bathroom.

Tip: Expect the Unexpected

While it’s good to get a cost estimate, it’s important to build in a bit of extra budget for unforeseen expenses. This is particularly important when you are doing it yourself. When you work with a professional bathroom remodeling contractor you’ll get the advantage of having a fixed quote from some contractors. Despite that, though, there will be a scope of work covered by that quotation and unexpected problems could be uncovered during the bathroom remodel that were not covered by that quote so wherever possible it’s wise to budget an extra 10-20% just in case.
